Siwy Jeans - Designer Q & A

This week's designer Q&A is from Michelle Siwy of Siwy Jeans who not only designs jeans that make women look great but is also obviously a true denim lover.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still the most popular item of clothing.
The creation of the fabric it self is a phenomenon. Initially worn by heavy-duty laborers because it did not wear out as fast as others. Over the years, it translated into many styles through out the decades. Now, more than ever they are worn more frequently from people of all social classes. Fits have been updated and advances in denim fabric have taken place. It’s a dependable fashion that is comforting and familiar. It’s something that has become a personal experience to the owner. There are lots of emotional connections to jeans .The shading and color becomes your own over time. Gradation and subtle variation within yard textures and color show your personality.
2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes Siwy Jeans stand out from the rest?
It’s true that there is a sea of denim offerings out there, but the competition is cut in half because most do not deliver what they say do. Of the labels that are left, they truly have something unique and different to add. Denim has become so refined and our tastes have become so refined, that people crave options. I feel I am still filling a void for jeans that are working with a woman’s body and not against it. I try to provide style options that are just as technical in fit as they are beautiful.
3) Who do you imagine is a typical Siwy Jeans customer?
A person who is a free thinker that appreciates art, beauty and design.

4) Which style and wash of Siwy Jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?

The most popular style is the Hannah, Slim Crop Style in the rain wash, which is a light, clean, fresh gray. It’s basically a skinny jean, where the inseam lands averagely above the ankle. We have had it in the line from the beginning and were popular before it was a big trend. It goes well into boots or neatly above flats. It works really well for petite girls, who want skinny jeans and don’t want to hem. On the opposite end of the denim spectrum, which is equally popular are the Camilla, Slouchy Cut-Off shorts in the Wonder wash. The hem is strategically frayed for a more organic and natural look, which develops more beautifully with wear. The fit has a sexy, slouchy fit.

5) If you had to choose one of the following which would you say is more important - the way a pair of jeans look or how comfortable they feel?

Jeans can either accentuate the positive or the negative depending on the balance of the design and your comfort level. Nothing will ever look good, if you don’t feel good, no matter how awesome it looks. You shouldn’t have to try that hard. At this day and age the denim technology has developed so much in the comfort area. Lots of options offer comfort built right into the fabric while still being able to achieve very authentic textures. There is no reason to deny that, especially in premium jeans.

6) Are there any essential jeans that everyone should have in their wardrobe?

Every girl needs the following jeans in their wardrobe at the moment:
    a. Dark cropped jeans
    b. Long skinny gray jeans
    c. Short denim shorts to wear with black tights and ankle booties.
    d. Cut off shorts just to kick around in
    e. A pair of raw jeans that you can really watch age over time.

It’s also important to remind people that confidence never goes out of style. If you want to wear it, you need to own the look. Otherwise, you will just look like a fashion victim.

7) What are the first pair of jeans you remember?

I remember finding a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans when I was 13 at The Salvation Army. I remember this particular stunning shade that just popped out amongst rest of the blues. I took the waistband off so they dropped low. I wore them with various body suits underneath at the time.

8) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have owned?

I will never forget a pair of very old worn, Levi’s that my father gave me when I was around 14. They were very hard, so I soaked them in bleach and water for a while, and then soaked them in fabric softener and water. Then tossed it in the washing machine, over and over. I think I used 2 full bottles of fabric softener. I’m surprised I didn’t cause an explosion with this concoction I tested. They were super soft and eventually the knees busted open. I repaired them as many times as I could and cut them into knee shorts, before I out grew them.

9) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have produced?

I adore my hannah/ kiss jeans. The kiss wash has been in the line from the beginning and I have an emotional attachment to them. It’s a wash that is more interactive with than the others because of the depth and character that develops over time. They have been with me everywhere and no matter what mood I am in, these go with them. I am reminiscent and have wonderful memories in these jeans. I have grown so much as a person from the time I first wore them.

10) How many pairs of jeans do you currently own and which are your favourites?

I have well over a hundred pairs in my closet. Only a few are on heavy rotation at the moment. I love the siwy hannah-slim crop jeans, camilla-cut off short, christina-slouchy shorts and rose-drain pipes right now. They work so well with all of my ankle booties, suede boots, winter tights, loose tees and big chunky sweaters for fall.

11) Are you a "wash your jeans after each wear" person or a "wear your jeans for six months before you wash them" person?

I rarely wash my jeans. I start my jeans very tight, so they stretch to my body and not beyond that. The dyes age more beautifully and artistically with more depth and character. Once that develops, I hand wash them inside out and hang them in the sun to dry, ideally.

12) Do you own jeans for different occasions (for instance I have work jeans, smart jeans, weekend jeans, holiday jeans, jeans for going to concerts in, jeans for gardening in) if so what have you got?

I wear jeans anywhere I want. With so many styles and options to enhance a one’s wardrobe, I think any style is versatile enough to adapt to any environment.

13) Which is your favourite jeans shop?

I think the people at Hollywood Trading Company in Los Angeles have amazing radar for cult denim lines from around the world. The buyer’s keen sense of style shows with his choices. They seem to discover lines before everyone else and understand the concept. They just get it by looking and feeling.

14) Who is your current favourite denim icon (male & female). I am thinking the person who has the most denim style?

I’ve been inspired by Kate Moss since I was 14. I remember seeing images of her, pure and natural, with the perfect shade of worn blue on, sexily slung low over her hipbones. Any style of denim she wears, that may seem hard to digest at first, becomes a huge trend because she owns her look. She makes it look effortless. Her beauty and sex appeal is the same mood that denim evokes. Together, Kate + Denim creates an explosion of the senses.

15) Which person living or dead would you most like to see in a pair of Siwy Jeans?

I am more influenced by women with an impeccable and organic sense of style like Anita Pallenberg, Selma Blair, Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and Kate Moss. The difference between these ladies is that they don’t let the clothes wear them. They make their choices look effortless. Their beauty and sex appeal is so natural, organic and sexy. Denim is natural, organic and sexy. When I’m designing, I always ask myself “can you picture these jeans as a compliment to their amazing wardrobes?” “Would they be attracted to this wash?” If I can imagine them wearing and loving something I designed, then it stays in the line.

16) If denim jeans had not been invented, what would we all be wearing?

I’m starting to cringe at the thoughts running through my mind! I’d be forced to wear a ..gulp.. dress!

17) And finally, any predictions for future trends in denim jeans?

I’m no psychic or jean-ious, but what I do know is that with the age of the internet and digital television, we are influencing each other globally within seconds. We are being transported to another place and time in practically real time. Eventually, it changes the course and pace of how fast trends develop and are recycled. Something beautiful is about to take shape.

wow, i can't believe the designer is a girl. you can definitely tell when wearing them.
cool website here

There are two brands I am completely in love with and that is Siwy and Crown Atelier. The jeans are the most flattering fit I have in my closet and my secret is to pair them with a regal blouse from Crown Atelier. I can't decide which brand gives me the most compliments. Both these brands are a little hard to find, but they are well worth the wait!
