Here we can compare and contrast two of 2007 hottest denim trends on two of Hollywoods hottest actresses. Jennifer Lopez was giving the high-waist skinny jeans look a thorough road test on her recent trip to MTV's TRL whilst Eva Mendez opted for widest of wide leg jeans (courtesy of Diane von Furstenberg) at the Grindhouse premier in LA this week. On this occasion I think J Lo and her high-waisted skinny jeans wins hands down..

This week's Designer Q & A is with Johnny, the Head Designer at Evisu.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?

Jeans haven't always been popular, but have evolved over time. They were once strictly work wear worn by people who needed clothes that would not fall apart and would withstand physical labor. They were then adopted by American youth as a bold anti-establishment icon, and then later have gone through every conceivable fashion genre from catwalk to grunge and everything in between. On top of all that you can get jeans in countless washes, colors, and finishes. You could argue that its more to do with the versatility of denim as a clothing fabric as oppose to the popularity of the 5 pocket.

2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest?

We have a saying at Evisu which is "Before anyone did anything, Evisu did everything". This refers to our origins in 1988 when our founder Hidehiko Yamane was inspired by the beauty of vintage jeans, but unable to buy new jeans that had the same quality. Since then, Evisu has pioneered countless unique approaches to denim, styles, and washes, and has always remained an important part of the business, which has been done years before any of the other premium jeans brands were started. Evisu stands out for this commitment to quality and innovation, which is something a lot of the other brands are just mimicking.

This is one of the more unusual denim collaborations I have come across - one of my favourite TV series Entourage is launching a range of jeans and t-shirts with AG Jeans. Each pair of men's and women's jeans is subtly branded with the "Entourage" star logo on the waistband button. According to HBO's Vice President of Licensing and Retail this is only the beginning and we can expect to see "Sopranos" Italian wines and fine cigars at some point in the future. The cast (shown above) attended the recent launch party at the AG Adriano Goldschmied boutique in Beverly Hills.

Adidas have launched a collection of trainers, hats and sportswear named Materials of the World. The idea is to create products specific to different countries made from materials that have an associationa with that country. For Japan they have chosen to produce a Forum Mid trainer and Track Top made from selvage denim in tribute to the fact that japanese denim "is recognised around the world as some of the finest available".

Q) Dear Donna, Hi im 5"3 and weigh 10st6lbs, most of which sits on my hips and thighs I find it totally impossible to find jeans that fit especialy on the thighs. Can you recomend any particular makes that i could try? (From Sarah)

A) Although this sounds totally mad, you should actually try some low rise jeans. If you go for something high-waisted, it could cinch you in at the waist too much and draw emphasis to your lovely legs and embrace the thighs a little too lovingly. What I would suggest is a trouser style jean. They're fabulous, and are a great casual look for Summer. J & Company have one called the Robertson Jean (see above) that sits low on the hips, skims over the bum and has a wideish leg ending in a cuff at the bottom. They're great and super flattering. They have the room in the thighs you're looking for and the style will lend you a relaxed air. (Answered by Donna Ida Thornton, owner of Donna Ida Denim Boutique in London)
