Designer Q & A - Maise Label Denim
1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?
- They are workable, everyday, casual and cool!
2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest?
- Maise jeans are vintage inspired Australian made, have interesting details and are a great fit!
3) Who do you imagine is a typical customer?
- A confident, modern and young individual.
4) Where do you get your inspiration from?
- My style icons, vintage finds, music video clips.
5) Which style and wash of your jeans are flying out of the shops the quickest at the moment?
- For the Summer 07/08 range the high waisted 'History Jean' is proving to be very popular. These go in store in September but are already proving to be our biggest seller.
6) Are there any essential jeans that everyone should have in their wardrobe?
- Yes - for comfy everyday jeans I would say the Maise Jane Jean. For day/night jean the Maise History Jean are perfect and a pair of the Maise Serge Shorts (see above) never go astray in the Aussie summer.
7) What are the first pair of jeans you remember?
- Acid wash, elastic waist band jeans (thanks mum!)
8) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have owned?
- Blood & Glitter - from a small store in Covent Garden, because they started in the darkest denim, but washed out to be the nicest wash I have ever seen.
9) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have produced?
- History Jean (see above)
10) How many pairs of jeans do you currently own and which are your favourites?
- About 30 pairs, my favourites being all the maise ones, my blood & glitter pair, and a very old pair of levis jeans I stole from an ex boyfriend!
11) Are you a "wash your jeans after each wear" person or a "wear your jeans for six months before you wash them" person?
- I like the idea of not washing jeans to create your own character lines, however I do like a good pair of clean jeans!
12) Do you own jeans for different occasions (for instance I have work jeans, smart jeans, weekend jeans, holiday jeans, jeans for going to concerts in, jeans for gardening in) if so what have you got?
- Yes, I generally have 'going out' jeans and 'casual' jeans - however sometimes my 'going out' jeans will become my 'casual jeans' some weeks and visa versa.
13) Which is your favourite jeans shop?
- Liberty's in London & The Corner Shop in Sydney (they always have a great selection of the latest jeans)
14) Which celebs are currently wearing your jeans?
- The production for the summer 07/08 has yet to arrive; however the waiting list has begun!
15) How important big an effect does it have on your sales when a celeb is seen wearing a pair of your jeans?
- Obviously it will have a massive effect on your sales if a celeb is spotted in your jeans, however it does depend on the celeb!!!
16) Who is your current favourite denim icon (male & female). I am thinking the person who has the most denim style?
- Chloe Sevigny & Johnny Depp
17) Which character (male & female) from a movie had the most denim style?
- Parker Posey and Matthew McConaughey in dazed and confused
18) Which person living or dead would you most like to see in a pair of your jeans?
- Chloe Sevigny
19) If jeans had not been invented, what would we all be wearing?
- pyjamas
