This week's Designer Q & A is with Ben Taverniti, Designer of Hudson Jeans.

1) Why do you think after 200 years jeans are still one of the most popular items of clothing?
Jeans are alive .. the fabric is alive .. each pair is unique to itself and tell a story. Every tear, abrasion, fade, stress mark means something and defines the personality of the jean.

Plus, denim is universal and timeless. It’s everywhere and anytime. And, no matter what your style is, everyone is denim appropriate. It connects us all.

2) Last time I counted there were over 50 brands of premium denim jeans, what makes your jeans stand out from the rest?
Fit, Fabric, Wash, Period. We have always stuck to creating a flattering fit, using the best fabrics and innovative washes. We are loyal to our style and will never follow trends in our designs. We keep things clean and classic and focus on creating a truly premium jean.

3) Who do you imagine is a typical customer?
Chic, fashionable, confident, and never trendy. Hudson is classic, and that is our customer.

4) Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everything, anywhere, anytime. When I close my eyes at night, that’s really when it all comes together. I see the fabrics and the washes and pieces of inspiration from the day ~ maybe something from a magazine or someone crossing the street. That’s when inspiration really comes, and the next morning I’m ready to go.

5) Which style and wash are flying out of the shops?
Dark wash bootcuts and skinnies

6)Are there any essential jeans everyone should have in their wardrobe?
A pair of Hudsons

7) What are the first pair of jeans you remember?
A pair of vintage big E Levi’s that my dad brought me back from Tokyo when I was 12.

8) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have owned?
The Hudson 735DOB black men’s skinny. It’s a super skinny that I customized with extra holes and grinding.

9) What have been your favourite pair of jeans that you have produced?
The super skinny for women - 427 DOB black - it’s the women’s version of my favorite men’s pant.

10) How many pairs of jeans do you currently own and which are your favourites?
Easily over 100 pairs. Even more if you count the ones I still have in storage here and in France. I don’t have a favorite. I love them all, which is why I can’t throw them away.

11) Are you a "wash your jeans after each wear" person or a "wear your jeans for six months before you wash them" person?
I never wash my jeans. No joke ... never!

12) Do you own jeans for different occasions (for instance I have work jeans, smart jeans, weekend jeans, holiday jeans, jeans for going to concerts in, jeans for gardening in) if so what have you got?
No, absolutely not. Jeans are timeless - all you have to do to create a different look is pair them with new pieces and accessories. I don’t categorize them, I just change the style.

13) Which is your favourite jeans shop?
It’s hard to pick just one, but E Street Denim in Chicago is definitely on the list.

14) Which celebs are currently wearing your jeans?
Gisele, Kate Middleton, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Leighton Meester, Katherine Heigl, Jessica Biel, Angelina Jolie, Rachel Bilson, Hayden Panettiere, Vanessa Minillo, Sophia Bush, Jessica Alba, Hilary Duff, Eva Mendes-and more.

16) Who is your current favourite denim icon (male & female). I am thinking the person who has the most denim style?
Anyone w/ CONFIDENT STYLE.

18) What is the worst denim crime?
Embellishments. Rhinestones, studs, embroidery - we don’t need it, and we don’t use it.

19) If jeans had not been invented, what would we all be wearing?
Probably nothing at all.

20) And finally, any predictions for denim in 2008/09
The take over.
