Here is an interesting and some might say unwelcome trend that was spotted on the S/S 08 catwalks - ripped jeans. The faded, ripped jeans above from the Christopher Kane S/S 08 show are giving me serious 80s flashbacks whilst the ones below from the Maison Martin Margiela S/S 2008 show are actually more rip than denim.

TopShop are another brand predicting that 2008 will be the year faded denim makes a return. Their Fall 2008 Show at London Fashion Week featured long skirts and bootcut jeans all in pale blue. (Source: Coutorture)

After having seen all the denim on display at Milan, Paris and New York a couple of trends became apparent. Designers DSquared, Rock & Republic, John Galliano, Hermes and Evisu all teamed their jeans (often worn with turn-ups) with big (usually black) boots.

The John Galliano Fall 2008 Show at Paris Fashion Week may not have contained the most wearable denim but the outfits on display were certainly original. The models either looked like something out of a Shakespeare play or some kind of a zombie gimp torturer. Once again heavy boots were being worn with everything.

Most of the denim on show in Paris, Milan and New York has been on the slim side. Bottega Veneta however decided that men's legs need a little room to breath and so have produced some super baggy wide leg jeans which they showed at Milan Fashion Week. Unfortunately these jeans are giving me flashbacks one of the most heinous fashion crimes of the 1970s - Oxford Bags.

Like DSquared, the Junya Watanabe Fall Show 2008 at Paris Fashion Week also seemed to be influenced by British style, although this time it was a lot quirkier. The jeans on show were turned up and worn with classic English country gentlemen's brogues. However, the less said about the things from the waist up (which mostly comprised too-tight jackets and dodgy hats) the better.

I reckon the DSqaured designers must have rented out a DVD of Shane Meadow's great movie This is England because the Fall 2008 collection which they showed at Milan Fashion Week is heavily influenced by the skinhead style of the 1980s - which means tight faded or bleached jeans combined with big boots and braces.

As you would expect from one of the best denim brands around, the Evisu Fall 2008 show at Milan Fashion Week featured lots and lots of great looking classic denim for men. The thing I really like about Evisu is although they have branched out into producing menswear, womenswear and footwear they haven't ever neglected their denim. I often feel that with some of the premium denim brands their jeans are just a way for them to get a foothold in the luxury goods market in order to start selling the real money making items like shoes, bags and perfume.
