April77 - Fast Living Denim

April77 are based in France and have produced a very distinctive collection of denim that is inspired by late 70s punk and new wave bands. The jeans come in an ultra skinny fit and are designed to be worn with brothel creepers, a leather jacket and a quiff. April77's brand manifesto states that they dig The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Motorhead but that they do not do fading, distressing or leather patches. To get away with a look like this you are going to need more than a little punk rock attitude.

Celebrity Denim - Tommy Lee

Tommy Lee (of Motley Crue and Pamela Anderson fame) knows a thing of two about marketing his personal brand. He's had a reality TV series or two and now he is onto the inevitable celebrity endorsed clothing line - People's Liberation for Tommy Lee. The collection includes skinny, straight-leg, super-low, and boot-cut jeans which feature back pocket designs inspired by the rocker's tattoos (see above). Apparently "when one purchases a piece from the line, they're also buying a piece of the rock-and-roll lifestyle" and here was me thinking that the rock and roll lifestyle was all about sex and drugs rather than something you picked up in the local mall.

Nudie Video - How Jeans Get Made

vid1.jpg
Have you ever wondered what is involved in the production of a pair of jeans? Super cool Swedish brand Nudie have made a video which shows the whole process from the spinning and dyeing of the yarn, to the weaving of the material and the cutting, stitching, sewing, scraping, sand blasting, washing and finishing of the jeans. I found it fascinating so see the care and attention that goes into the making of an item which most of us take for granted. Whilst on the subject of videos, MSNBC also has an interesting video report on the premium denim market.

PRPS Classic Selvage Jeans

A few weeks ago I mentioned PRPS Jeans (which are worn by Brad Pitt and David Beckham) in one of my entries, well this weekend I succumbed and bought myself a pair. Most of the PRPS Jeans come highly aged and distressed, but I chose the darkest pair of Classic Selvage One Wash Jeans. The beauty of these jeans is all in the details, they are made of cotton from Zimbabwe which is woven on Japanese looms, the selvage is purple (rather than the usual red), the rivets are black (rather than copper) and the buttons on the fly are each a different colour. However, none of that would matter unless the jeans fitted well, and these do, like a slightly looser 501 at the top with a wide straight leg below the knee. These jeans do not come cheap but to a denim snob like myself that just means that you are less likely to see anyone else wearing the them.

Here is a sneak peek of the Acne Jeans Autumn/Winter 2006 Collection in which they say they are attempting to "modernize classic fragments of work wear by adapting it to the period when the futuristic sixties met the romantic seventies". I'm not quite sure what that means but they seem to have produced some decent looking dark and skinny jeans for men and women.
